Roof Cleaning, in practice
Pressure washing a roof strips the granules that protect the shingle, takes years off it and voids the manufacturer warranty. Roof cleaning is entirely a chemistry and dwell-time job, and any company arriving with a pressure wand for a shingle roof should be sent away.
The black streaking is Gloeocapsa magma, an algae that thrives in exactly this climate. It feeds on limestone filler in the shingle, which is why it returns on a cycle, and treating it properly kills the organism rather than washing the visible layer off.

FAQ
Roof Cleaning — questions
What are the black streaks on my roof, and can they be removed?
Algae — Gloeocapsa magma — feeding on the limestone filler in the shingles, and it is on most roofs in Middle Tennessee. It is removed with a soft wash: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure and rinsed, which kills it without stripping granules. Pressure washing a roof takes years off it, and it is not done here.
Is roof cleaning worth it, or is it just cosmetic?
Both. The algae holds moisture and feeds on the shingle, and a heavily streaked roof ages faster and runs hotter. Cleaning it extends the roof and it is a fraction of a replacement. It also matters when selling: a streaked roof reads as an old roof to a buyer even when it is not.
