Pressure, cleaner and rinse: driveway sealing & sealcoating on the day
Sealer protects a surface that is already clean and sound; it does not repair one. An asphalt driveway is sealcoated after it has been washed and its cracks filled, or the sealer goes over dirt and lifts within a season. Concrete is sealed after cleaning for the same reason, and a stain that is sealed in is a stain that is there for good.
On asphalt, sealcoating every two to three years is what keeps the surface from oxidizing gray and going brittle. On concrete, a penetrating sealer stops water getting into the pores where a Middle Tennessee freeze can spall the surface off; a film-forming sealer adds sheen and stain resistance on a patio but is slippery when wet and needs redoing more often.
Timing matters here. Sealer needs a dry surface, a day without rain and temperatures the product is rated for, and an asphalt driveway needs a full day, sometimes two, before it is driven on. A sealing job scheduled around the forecast is one that lasts.

FAQ
What people ask about driveway sealing & sealcoating
How often should an asphalt driveway be sealcoated?
Every two to three years, and the first time within a year of it being laid. Sealcoat is what stops asphalt oxidizing gray and going brittle in the sun, and it keeps water out of the small cracks before a Middle Tennessee freeze opens them. A driveway that has never been sealed and is fading is not too late; one that is alligator-cracked across its surface is past sealing and into resurfacing.
How long before I can drive on a sealed driveway?
Twenty-four hours for most sealcoat, sometimes forty-eight in humid weather, and foot traffic after a few hours. Concrete sealer is usually walkable within hours and drivable the next day. The driveway is taped off and the forecast is checked before the job is scheduled, because rain on fresh sealer is a job done twice.
